Nestled along the winding, northern Pacific Coast, Stinson Beach is a hidden gem in West Marin County, California. Just 20 miles north of San Francisco, this charming coastal town offers a blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cute attractions. Whether you're seeking a serene escape or an adventurous day trip, Stinson Beach has something for everyone.
Getting There:
About an hour's drive will get you by car from San Francisco to Stinson Beach. Drive north across the Golden Gate Bridge, take Highway 101, and then exit onto Highway 1, following signs along the way. The scenic drive along Highway 1 offers amazing cliffside views of the coastline on the left and rolling hills on the right. Locals know that there is a faster and easier route if you exit at Mill Valley, take a left at the 2AM Club on Miller Ave., and proceed over Mt. Tamalpais from there. Additionally, there is a public bus available on Marin Transit whose route begins in Sausalito and ends in Bolinas, with a stop at Stinson along the way.
Morning:
Breakfast at Parkside Café:
Located just off the beach on Arenal Ave, start your day with the Parkside's famous avocado toast and a freshly squeezed Valencia orange mimosa. There are multiple options for whatever you're in the mood for, from the expertly crafted pastries at the Coffee Cart, to the traditional Café, to the long-standing Snack Bar and the take-out Marketplace (try the excellent sourdough loaves and homemade pesto for picnicking beachside). The outdoor seating area provides a view of the mountains and is dog-friendly.
Beach Time:
Head straight to the beach to lounge, walk and enjoy the serene atmosphere. Stinson Beach is known for its soft, white sand, expansive beach and gentle waves. The water is usually cold but during the summer months, refreshing. Lifeguards are on duty during June, July and August and there is a dog-friendly, off-leash area at the north end of the national park.
Midday:
Explore Mount Tamalpais State Park:
From town, you can begin a gorgeous sea-view hike up and into Mount Tamalpais State Park. The Matt Davis Trail, which starts near the beach and winds up into the lush, forested hills, offers amazing coastline and SF views. This hike will give your quads and glutes a workout.
Lunch at The Siren Canteen:
Located at the base of the Lifeguard Tower, The Siren Canteen is an open-air eatery serving up tasty tacos and burgers, all with the most gorgeous views of the Pacific. Their fish tacos, homemade chips, homemade chutney bar and frozen lemonade can be enjoyed on their picnic tables or just taken steps away to sit on the sand and enjoy.
Afternoon:
Kayaking or Paddleboarding:
Rent a foam-top surfboard, kayak, or paddleboard from Stinson Beach Surf & Kayak and explore the calm waters of Bolinas Lagoon (if you can find the turn-off for this famously private town!) Bolinas Lagoon is a protected area and home to a variety of wildlife, including sea lions, herons, and pelicans. It's a peaceful way to experience the natural beauty of the area.
Local shopping
Take a walk through town and stop by Stinson Beach Books. This cozy, independent bookstore offers a curated selection of books, including local authors and best-sellers. Don't be shy to ask for recommendations. I have discovered some excellent beach reads introduced by their staff over the years. Another must-visit is the Live Water Surf Shop who sell the iconic 'no sharks' hoodies and board stickers well worn by locals and tourists alike.
Evening:
Sunset at the Beach:
Stop by Stinson Beach Market for provisions before catching the Pacific coast sunset. Since Stinson is a west-facing beach, it provides a perfect vantage point for watching the sun dip below the horizon. Bring a blanket (temps drop quick!) and enjoy as the sun disappears below Bolinas to the north.
Dinner at Sand Dollar Restaurant:
End your day with dinner at the Sand Dollar Restaurant. I've enjoyed many a solo evening at the bar, book in hand, waiting for my enormous bowl of mussels and a local glass of white. There is a cozy, rustic ambiance year-round and usually live jazz on the weekends.
Additional Tips:
Parking:
Stinson offers a large parking lot, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Arrive by 11:00 AM at the latest to secure a spot.
Weather: Weather on the coast of northern California is ever-changing. Fog is usually always lingering in the morning but burns off by lunchtime. The coastal breeze is always cool so it's not uncommon for those in the know to pack a beach bag with a puffer and a bikini!
